Then again, why go cheap if the intention is to inspire genuine smiles and warmth? Other than engagement rings and graduation gifts, handmade gifts present the gift-giver with a great excuse to go big or go home.

3. It’s probably green

Particularly if the intended recipient is a Gen-Y’er, environmentally conscious, vegetarian, or vegan, a handmade gift is the right choice for the right reasons: it will inspire the recipient’s inner hippie and leave our world a bit less polluted. An important caveat to remember: if a green philosophy is the centerpiece of your masterpiece, just make sure its overall impact on energy consumption and the environment really is zero, or as close to it as possible. Nothing is as cringe-worthy as a widely panned gift with honorable intentions.

4. It may support a starving artist

You don’t have to go far in your community to meet the artist whose passion is art. Even if you don’t make a handmade gift, buying one at a local store will contribute back to your community by encouraging the production and sale of local art. With the economy lingering on in recovery mode, many artists and artisans, devoid of wealthy benefactors or corporate sponsors, find themselves with empty wallets and in desperate straits. All the more reason to avoid the big business of mass-produced effects and steal the show with a humble token straight from the heart of Americana.

5. Making it will probably relieve stress

The process of creation is known to relieve stress and promote positive energy. If you, in your role as gift-giver, make the threaded bracelet, portrait, or basket, you’ll in all likelihood save yourself a future trip to the doctor or gym. Who says gift-giving can’t be a two-way street?

So you’re convinced that you’d like to give that special someone, friend, or family member a handmade jewelry gift. Where to start? There’s no guide that contains all the ideas on earth for a great handmade gift, so the best place to start is with what the intended gift recipient likes or would like. What’s their passion? Likes? Gothic fashion represents an alternative, occasionally eccentric, fashion style. Gothic clothing is characterized by dark pieces worn from head to toe. Some consider the style to be morbid or vampire-like. Some pieces are inspired by designs in the Victorian and Elizabethan era.

Gothic clothing is typically composed of black clothes, usually combined with bold accents in red, deep purple or silver. Designs of gothic clothing include crosses, Wiccan symbols and Egyptian ankhs, to name a few. On certain occasions, instead of the typical all-black ensemble, Goths also tend to wear all-white clothing.

Typical clothing for female Goths includes elaborate dark-colored corsets and detailed gowns. Fitted jeans and boots are also favorite pieces worn by female Goths. To add more drama to the outfit, girls also wear fishnet stockings, veils and black boots.

On the other hand, typical clothing for male Goths includes rugged or tight pants combined with a dark suit. They also tend to wear black trenchcoats. Occasionally, male Goths also wear female clothing, such as skirts, corsets and even dresses.

Goths typically wear black make-up to further enhance the dark look. Both males and females wear dark make-up. Black eyeliner, black lipstick and black nail polish are usually worn. T-Shirt Screen Printing

Screen printing is a popular method for transferring customized designs on fabric. Here are the basic steps involved in the t-shirt screen printing process.

STEP 1: CHOOSING THE SCREEN

There are several kinds of screens available for screen printing. Screens with an aluminum frame are more expensive than those with wooden frames, but typically last longer. Screens also differ on their mesh count. Screens with higher mesh counts allow for finer printing, and are typically used when printing on paper. When printing on fabric, a mesh count of about 110 or 160 is generally used.

STEP 2: BURNING THE DESIGN ONTO THE SCREEN

Next, you have to burn your design onto the screen. This is called a stencil. Every color used in the design requires a different stencil. Once you have the design you want, separate the image based on the different colors used. You can use a number of computer software programs to do this task for you. Next, change the images into black-and-white and print it onto a transparent film.

Once you have the black-and-white image, coat the screen evenly in emulsion and allow the emulsion to dry. Then, place the transparency on top of the emulsion-coated screen. Next, go to a darkroom and expose the screen to light for several minutes. This will allow the emulsion to on the white areas, making sure that no ink passes through. Once the emulsion has hardened, spray the screen with water to remove the soft areas.

STEP 3: TRANSFERRING THE DESIGN ONTO THE SHIRT

Finally, pour ink onto the screen, making sure you are applying even pressure all throughout. Let the ink dry first before printing the next layer, to make sure that the colors do not bleed. Once you’ve printed all the layers, let the ink dry. Now, you’re done!

A t-shirt bag is a reusable, fashionable craft that you can easily create at home. Since it is made out of fabric, it can be easily folded to fit snugly in your closet. Here are the basic steps in making your t-shirts into functional bags:

First, flip the t-shirt inside out, making sure that the seams are aligned. Cut the sleeves at the point where they meet the rest of the t-shirt. Then, sew the bottom of the t-shirt in order to close it.

Next, decide on whether you want the opening of the bag to be round or square. For round openings, get a bowl and trace a half-circle around the neck of the t-shirt; for square openings, use a ruler. Using your tracing as a guide, cut through both the front and the back of the t-shirt. You now have the basic outline of your t-shirt bag.

Fold approximately 1 cm along the areas where the t-shirt was cut and pin it. Sew the hems, making sure that no loose edges are showing.

Finally, flip the t-shirt right side out and accessorize it! Add designs using fabric paint or sew in ribbons or beads. Also try adding buttons or zippers. You can also make a pocket using fabric from the sleeves that were cut off earlier.

When using the t-shirt bag, remember that the bag is made from fabric; thus, it is best not to place heavy and bulky contents in it so that it doesn’t loose its shape or get torn.

2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP

This vehicle is the epitome of sex appeal, performance, and complete and utter uselessness, all rolled into one well priced package. The Pontiac Solstice GXP is a vehicle that every man, woman, and child wants to own.

The base Solstice (and its twin, the Saturn Sky) can be had in the upper 20’s, meaning that you walk out of the dealer with a very attractive car, equipped with a 170 horsepower engine, with cash still left in your bank account. The Solstice GXP (and its twin, the Saturn Sky Redline) is a bit more expensive (around $8,000 more), and massive demand has shot the MSRP price up.

However, that extra change nets you an entirely different vehicle. Allow me to digress.

The Vehicle

The Pontiac Solstice GXP looks similar to the regular Solstice, with very few styling cues setting it apart. The wheels are a bit larger, and there is one more exhaust pipe adorning the read end of the car, but otherwise there is little that separates the two.

The real difference, you see, lies underneath the hood. Where the regular Solstice is given a comfortable 170 horsepower, the GXP is blessed with over 260 neck-snapping horses, delivered via a slick turbocharged engine and close ratio five speed transmission.

If you’re having a hard time realizing the significance of that power difference, let me put it to you like this: imagine that the regular Solstice is a city bus. Riding the bus can be comfortable, though there is nothing about it that screams “maximum performance”, is there? The GXP is kind of like a rocket ship, throwing you forward at an incredible rate of speed, refusing to let up for even one moment as it forces unreal amounts of thrust upon you. Now do you see where I’m coming from?

Driving the Car

I could go on all day about how undeniably sexy the exterior is, but a quick Google image search will yield the same understanding as I have come to realize: this car is gorgeous, no matter which angle you view it at. The design team should be given awards, free cars, and a microwave in recognition of their massive aesthetic success.

The interior of the car is attractive, though being 6’2” and 225 lbs, I found it to be a bit cramped. Operating the power window buttons required me to finagle my left arm in order to hit the switch, though it was nothing uncomfortable. As well, the rag top is manual operated, as opposed to a power folding top. A minor gripe, but a valid point just the same.

However, all is forgiven as soon as this vehicle is on the roads, as this vehicle is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on four wheels.

Pressing the throttle to the floor yields a moment of tepid acceleration, followed by the sound of a fully spooled turbo and the feeling of being thrown into the back of your seat. The acceleration is brutal, causing the Solstice to careen down the roadway at speeds that are very illegal.

I slow down, taking a corner, hard, and mashing the throttle once again. The rear tires break loose, and I find myself sideways at 60 miles per hour. Recovering quickly, I once again allow the car to launch forward, the vehicle once again accelerating furiously, as if it is chasing down its next meal.

By the time I’ve pulled into the dealership I am out of breath- this vehicle represents the embodiment of what a pure, unadulterated drivers car should be. Move over Mazda Miata- though you are fun to drive, you cannot match the sheer ferocity of the Solstice.

The Bottom Line

This vehicle starts, stops, and turns without complaint. The suspension is firm enough that you are able to throw the car around corners and remain glued to the road, and the 2.0 litre turbo has more than enough power to send this vehicle flying down the road, leaving just about every other car in its wake.

I love it, and you will too. Trust me.

2007 Chevrolet Cobalt SS

A black silhouette of a vehicle is brought before me, its massive 18” wheels filling the pronounced wheel arches nicely. The style is sleek, pushed back, and very attractive. This may be the first sport compact that Chevrolet has released in a long time that has caught my attention.

Before I get into the vehicle I spend a few moments admiring the aggressive flairs which separate this vehicle, the Cobalt SS Supercharged, from the regular Cobalt. Larger wheels, a lower stance, and of course, the massive rear wing all highlight the gem under the hood- a 2.0L 4 cylinder that, with the assistance of a supercharger, puts out just over 200 horsepower to the front wheels.

This particular vehicle was slightly different than most, and the larger exhaust was an indication of that. Owners of the Cobalt SS Supercharged (Cobalt SS-S?) have the option of purchasing performance upgrades from the dealer, adding up to 36 horsepower and 30 pound feet of torque and retaining the comfort of a factory warranty.

This vehicle was equipped with such modifications.

Inside the Car

The interior of Cobalt SS is abundant in plastics, though their quality is much better than the vehicles released in the last few years. Low on the drivers side A pillar is a boost gauge, designed to let the driver know how much boost the supercharger was providing.

The seats are quite supportive and form fitting- I found myself strapped in quite nicely, and I was confident in my positioning. The seats are also adjustable in nearly every way, and the option to have heated power leather seats is available to those who want their glutes a little warmer.

The center console and dash are attractive enough, and all of the dials and buttons are easy to reach. Being 6’2” and 225 lbs makes some vehicles a challenge to operate, but the Cobalt SS-S is more than happy to oblige my every request. Turning up the stereo, I am greeted to a melodic symphony of the latest top-40 billboard hits, displayed with prominence as the 10” subwoofer in the trunk spits out vibration inducing bass.

After admiring the cockpit, I turn on the engine and place the Cobalt into gear. Raising the revs to just fewer than 3,000 rpm, I feather the clutch and launch the vehicle.

Driving the Car

The Cobalt takes off quickly, the thrust coming on smoothly. The relatively linearity of the power band makes this car easy to drive as it builds speed. With every shift of the silky-smooth transmission I find the speedometer rising, quickly reaching speeds that are both unsafe and unlawful.

I am pleased.

Trying out the responsiveness of the gears, I am happy to see that the Cobalt remains its pep in all but 5th gear, and I am led to believe that the lack of power in its last gear is simply the result of the revs being too low. Though not the quickest car on the road, it displays excellent form and dynamics as I throw it headlong into hairpin turns and dramatic stops.

The suspension is firm, and I feel every crack and divot in the road. As I take corners I remain planted in my seat, and my confidence remains high as the sport-tuned suspension handles my abuse with ease. The limits of this vehicle are obviously quite high.

Overall Impression and Conclusion

I am at a stoplight when a bagged drop-top 5.0L fox body Mustang pulls up beside me. The driver has his hat on backwards and is positioned low in his seat. He looks at the car, then me, and then back at the car. He nods towards the distance, motioning that he wants to race. With the salesmen in the seat beside me, I rev the engine- I’m happy to oblige.

I raise the revs to just under 3,000 rpm, and I hear the distinctive roar of 8 cylinders firing in response. The light turns green, and I aggressively feather the clutch, launching the Cobalt forward in a split second. My tires chirp slightly, though I am able to retain traction and rocket forward. The Mustang is not far behind, having spun his tires excessively when he dropped the clutch.

I am just passing 120 miles per hour when the Mustang finally catches me. The owner, obviously surprised that it took him that long to catch me, nods in approval. His vehicle sounds as if it has over 300 horsepower under the hood, and he speeds off into the distance.

I shift my attention to the salesmen and shoot him a nod. I’m impressed.

The bottom line is that this vehicle is a relatively inexpensive way to have 240 horsepower worth of fun. It accelerates quickly, stops quickly, and encounters turns with ease and confidence. For someone looking for a sports car that can also seat four people, this is your ride.

As fashion launches itself headfirst into 2007, emerging musical trends - most notably indie rock and new rave - seem to have influenced the t-shirt design industry in a variety of ways. Tops and T-shirts for men found on the fashion highway are so bright, colourful and splashed across with patterns that it's hard to believe that, at one time, the t-shirt was only available in one colour - white.

The t-shirt has a long history that dates back to the nineteenth century. Primarily developed as a type of underwear, the t-shirt was popularised in European society around the turn of the century. The t-shirt then spread into the United States during World War One, when American soldiers caught sight of the soft undershirts - then made of Egyptian cotton - while the US military sweated in wool uniforms.

By World War Two, the t-shirt had become standard issue in both the US army and the Navy; and although the t-shirt was still formally issued as underwear, soldiers stationed in hot climates would often wear it without any clothes on top - hence giving birth to the modern notion of the t-shirt. As the public were exposed to photographs of men wearing their t-shirts, the fashion soon spread into American life.

In the post-World War Two era, t-shirts were popularised by global movie stars such as John Wayne, Marlon Brando and James Dean - and since this time, t-shirt fashion trends have undergone constant revolutions. In the 1960s, Ringer T-Shirts were popular, as were tie-dying and screen-printing on basic t-shirts. In the 1970s, the black concert t-shirt became a staple with rock music fans across the world, as people began wearing t-shirts emblazoned with their favourite band's logo or symbol for all to see.

While the t-shirt trend continued well into the 1980s and 1990s, these decades also saw the advent of slogan t-shirts. T-shirt slogans like "I'm with stupid" or "Frankie says Relax" - a popular homage to the 1980s band, Frankie Goes to Hollywood - became a common fashion feature. But as these slogans became increasingly ubiquitous, it's no surprise that the early years of the new millennium saw the phenomenon of "personal branding" on t-shirts become a mainstay of t-shirt fashion.

And with both traditional fashion retailers and t-shirt websites making it easier for people to create their own t-shirt trends, the world of t-shirt design has never been brighter - in both a physical and metaphorical sense! With every generation movie stars have worn them. Rock stars have shredded them. And celebrities have stripped them. Paris anyone? The t-shirt has been the fashion essential for over 70 years and probably another 70 years and more. So how did it get here and what does the future hold?

Origins - Call to Arms in Short Sleeves

The t-shirts humble beginnings can be traced back to the early 1930's. WWI European soldiers entrenched in mud wore the t-shirt as an undergarment. The advantages of the light cotton underwear were quickly adopted by the US military. By WWII the US Army and Navy had supplied the t-shirt as standard issue. T-shirts at the time were still considered underwear and not worn casually.

1950's - Cult Movie Bad Boys

With the help of a sweating Brando in the 1951 film "A Streetcar Named Desire", and later a brooding James Dean in "Rebel without a Cause" the t-shirt had moved to mainstream youth culture. By the time Elvis had gyrated, the teenage rebellion seed was planted and along with denim jeans the t-shirt had become the hot fashion statement.

1960's - From Beatniks to Vietnam

The 60's were well known for social upheavals and political events. Many subcultures developed from Beatniks, Mods, Rockers to eventually Hippy's. During the early 60's The Beatles had ignored the t-shirt opting for their trademark suits. But by the late 60's the haze of the Hippy generation had created the tie dyed t-shirt. Dunked in several buckets of colourful dyes it became a symbol of the psychedelic era and possibly one of the worst fashion crimes of the century. Other t-shirt styles were born including the ringer, muscle, v-neck and tank t-shirts. The invention of screen printing saw social and political slogans expressed on apparel especially for the anti war sentiments of Vietnam.

1970's - Your Disco Needs You

Rock emerged beating to death the Hippy's with their own sandals. The black t-shirt was now standard issue with printed logos of stadium rock Supergroups such as Led Zeppelin, ACDC and Pink Floyd. In the course of the mid 70's Surf apparel started appearing. Niche surfing brands such as Lightning Bolt, Billabong, Rip Curl and Quiksilver would later become big corporations. Athletic giants Adidas, Puma, Reebok and Nike also gained prominence with their branded printed tees, shoes and apparel. The decade was also known for it's many classic t-shirt motto's including the Smiley face, "Sh*t Happens" and "I love NY" which would see a revival after 911. Fonzie in the TV sitcom Happy Days paid homage to Brando and Dean 20 years before by reintroducing the blank white tee. In 1977 the Star Wars phenomenon had exploded. Star Wars t-shirts were everywhere for the tween. But for the twenty something's there was of course Disco. With movies like Saturday Night Fever and Thank God it's Friday the flared trousers and tight t-shirts became the usual 70's silhouette.

1980's - Fashion beep beep

The influence of music had an extreme effect on fashion in the 80's. The New Romantic movement in the early 80's had passed on the simple tee, opting for a more extravagant look. Remember Flock of Seagulls? On the opposite spectrum the Punk movement was in full flight with black ripped up tees, Doc Marten boots, piercing and lots and lots of hair gel.

By the mid 80's the Japanese fashion influence had caught on. Designers Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake had reinvented the t-shirt to a large oversized kimono style cut. Katherine Hamnett in 1984 took it even further with the notable "Choose Life" print which was immediately embraced by Wham! in their video "Wake Me Up Before you Go Go". Not long after Frankie said "Relax" and The Smiths said "Meat is Murder" regurgitating the political t-shirt.

From the oversized tee stemmed the woman's "t-shirt dress" which developed into neon and day glow colours.

Springsteen brought the jeans and a t-shirt back to basics with rolled up macho sleeves during his Born in the USA phase. For the MTV generation Armani took the t-shirt to high fashion wearing the tee underneath a suit jacket. Of course the suit jacket sleeves were rolled up ala Crocket and Tubbs Miami Vice style (parodied exceptionally in that Friends episode).

1990's - Come As You Are

Surf tees saw a rebirth pioneered by new brands Stussy and Mossimo. Also adopted by Skaters long sleeve t-shirts became ever more popular. The Hypercolor t-shirt fad where the fabric changed colour with heat was very popular. Entertainingly if the wearer worked up a sweat big unsightly patches of colour change would occur around the armpits.

Again the influence of music came back into play. Hip Hop proved it wasn't a phase adopting at first Adidas as a brand. Later various Rap specific brands emerged such as Sean John and Phat Farm. Dance, Trance and DJing gained prominence and tighter and sleeveless t-shirts worn with baggy pants become the mode. Grunge anti-fashion also took the tee in another direction with a dark worn appearance.

21st Century Brand Child

According to branding experts Al and Laura Ries in the book "The Origin of Brands", as a product category evolves the category then diverges further into more categories. Like a tree some branches may whither and die while others will further grow and diverge again. This is probably best explained with the invention of the TV. The TV has diverged from the humble B&W television to many other categories. We now have CRT, Plasma, LCD, HDTV, Rear Projection, portable and widescreen.

There is no doubt that divergence has affected the t-shirt. The shape of the t-shirt itself has diverged to anywhere from tight, regular, hip hop loose to baby tee. With the advent of the Internet we've seen a boom in smaller t-shirt label startups. Now there are so many categories we are almost overwhelmed for choice. Some t-shirt/apparel categories are:

Skate Brands: Hurley International, Globe, Element, Volcom, World

Surf Brands: Billabong, Mambo, Rip Curl, Rusty Quiksilver which has diverged to girl surf category Roxy.

Snowboard Brands: Burton, Salomon

Hip Hop Brands: Sean John, Ecko, G-Unit, Phat Farm.

American Retro Classic Brands: Dickies, Von Dutch, Harley Davidson.

Martial Arts Brands: Drunken Munky and various Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris logos.

Funny t-shirts: Vote for Pedro. Jesus is my homeboy, White Castle.

Internet Brands: T-shirt Hell, Café Press, Threadless.

Sport Brands: Puma, Nike, Adidas, Reebok.

American Basic Brands: Hanes, American Apparel, Fruit of the Loom and GAP.

High fashion Brands: Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci, Armani, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein.

The Future

So which category branches will whither and die and which will survive to the next decade? Would you rather look like Eminem, Kelly Slater or Tony Hawks? And what is a t-shirt anyhow? Is it a simple apparel design with a coloured screen printed artwork featuring a hobby, sport, band or affluence that you may identify with? Or is it a product branded, marketed and directly mass produced for your particular demographic? Either way T-shirts have become a billion dollar industry.

What next for the now not so humble tee? We're seeing 21st century fibres like Gortex, Merino wool and Lycra blends being used. As for logos some growing trends seem to be the Video Game t-shirts, Internet t-shirts and Poker t-shirts. Will these be the next surf or skate brands? Quite possibly. Will others develop out of our favorite past times? Could there even be a Sudoku brand, a MySpace brand, Porn brand, or an iPod brand of t-shirts? Perhaps design your own the new black? One thing is certain; history has shown us that there will be even more diversification far into the next decades. The power of the t-shirt has never been greater. Awesome!
